Time for the Volvo legacy to result in port development

What would Roy Keane make of it all? Getting up out of the warm beds at ungodly hours of the morning to stand by the dockside, singing The Fields of Athenry and ole ole and clapping in boats from far flung corners of the globe. He’d raise the eyes of heaven and say that it’s not good enough boy, that we shouldn’t be clapping in small boats, that we deserve better; that we should be staying in our beds til we get the massive boats we deserve, the oil tankers, the cruise liners, ships that act as midfield generals, ships that won’t be blown around in the wind on the sea, bossed by waves or bigger boats. He’d tell us to cop on and get back into the leabas.

Coady is a class act all around

In 2004 as All Ireland weekend approached the Mayo senior football management discussed the option of getting in a guest speaker to have a chat with the footballers before we lined out against Kerry. Certain individuals were suggested. . . the usual suspects from the various codes of sport. In recent times lots of teams have used big stars/names as they seek to gain the edge on match day. The likes of Roy Keane, Bernard Dunne and Keith Wood have all being invited to provide words of wisdom and reassurance on the eve of big matches. We invariably hear about the wonderful job these guys did if, and only if, the team manages to go on and achieve victory.

Political football - politics and the World Cup

The beautiful game and the world’s second oldest profession have often collided, colluded, and clashed on the big stage of the World Cup, so as the current tournament continues in South Africa, Talking Politics takes a politically slanted look at the competition’s history.

I Blame Keano!

“You were a crap player and you are a crap manager. The only reason I have any dealings with you is that somehow you are the manager of my country and you’re not even Irish….” It is alleged that after this tirade Roy Keane walked out of the Irish team at Saipan in 2002. Little did he know exactly what he just started, because start something he did. All contemporary economic and social wisdom indicates that the rot that exists in our socio economic and political system began to manifest itself during the middle of 2002 or thereabouts. Given that those tasked with managing the economy at the time deny any responsibility, then obviously someone else must be responsible for our economic distress. My money is on Roy Keane.
